On Thursday, March 2, the Modern and Contemporary Art Sale #230302 and M-Live Auction were held at a venue in Tokyo.
M-Live, which was held for the first time, is an online-only auction, mainly focusing on contemporary artworks. In addition to artists whose works we have already sold, we actively included works by contemporary artists such as Chiharu Kihara, Sakuraoka, and David Shrigley, all of whom were put in the auction for the first time at Mallet. In the auction day, LY's canvas work and prints by Ayako Rokkaku, Backside works, etc., showed good results. We will continue to aim for sales that stimulate the art market by handling young artists and disseminating their works at future auctions.
M-Live Auction
Online Live Bidding, which allows users to place bids via smartphone, tablet and PC has seen an increase in the number of users since its introduction last year, and approximately half of the lots in the two sales in March were sold using this bidding method.
The platform continues to be updated each time, with the addition of a new "bid in advance" feature this time. We hope you will try out the more convenient Online Live Bidding.
In the following report, we will introduce some of the works that attracted particularly strong bids from among the 261 lots in the two sales.
One print by Andy Warhol was the focus of great interest both at home and abroad. This print, one from a series on the subject of endangered species, depicts threatened animals in the vivid colors that Warhol is known for, emphasizing the existence of the species. In addition to the "Orangutan" in this lot, we have a history of sales of several other images, including a bald eagle, Siberian tiger, and African elephant.
This lot received many inquiries prior to the sale, resulting in a successful bid of 22,000,000 JPY.
Another silkscreen work by Warhol, "Joseph Beuys: state II," was offered at the first-ever M-Live Auction and sold for 3,300,000 JPY.
Lot 6 Andy Warhol , “Orangutan, from 'Endangered Species'”,
screenprint in colours, 1983
Estimate 4,000,000-6,000,000 JPY Sold Price 22,000,000 JPY
Lot 123, by Luis Feito, was one of the featured works on the cover of the catalog. Feito, who contributed to the development of abstract painting in Spain and was also active in France, worked from his studio in Madrid until his passing in 2021 due to Covid-19.
Although the condition of this 60-year-old canvas work has changed over the years, it retains the intensity of the "red" and "black" colors that the artist valued throughout his life; hence, the quality of the actual piece shines through. European customers showed great interest in the piece, bidding up to 3.4 times the lower price of the Estimate.
Lot 123 Luis Feito, “Base-226”, oil on canvas, 1961
Estimate 1,000,000-1,500,000 JPY Sold Price 3,400,000 JPY
In total, we received inquiries and participation from 26 countries for both sales. The following works were mainly boosted by the participation of international customers.
-Lot 113 Géza Vörös, “Still-Life with Demijohn and Eggplant”, oil on canvas, early 1930s
Estimate 400,000-600,000 JPY Sold Price 2,100,000 JPY
-Lot 117 Nuri Abaç, “Market”, oil on canvas, 1983
Estimate 200,000-300,000 JPY Sold Price 2,000,000 JPY
-Lot 124 Sayed Haider Raza, “Untitled, 1960", gouache on paper, 1960
Estimate 1,500,000-2,000,000 JPY Sold Price 6,600,000 JPY
The Company also continues to sell popular artists such as Yayoi Kusama and Yoshitomo Nara. This time, good woodblock prints have recorded a high growth rate from the lower estimation.
-Lot 12 Yayoi Kusama, "All things full of kindness touched my heart", Woodcut, 2015
Sold at 6,400,000 JPY
-Lot 14 Yayoi Kusama, "The Sun", gouache, ink, pastel and collage on paper, 1980
Sold Price 9,000,000 JPY
-Lot 52 Yoshitomo Nara, "After the Acid Rain (Night Version)", woodcut, 2010
Sold Price 7,000,000 JPY
-Lot 53 Yoshitomo Nara, "Star Island", Silkscreen, 2003
Sold Price 3,600,000 JPY
A large work by Toshimitsu Imai, who was also active as painter of “Art Informel” was included as in the last sale. This lot sold for 1,700,000 JPY, approximately 4.3 times the lower estimate of 400,000-600,000 JPY. In our auction history over the past several years, many of the artist's works have sold for more than the expected price.
Lot 88 Toshimitsu Imai, “River in the mountain depths”, acrylic on canvas, 1983-84
Estimate 400,000-600,000 JPY Sold Price 1,700,000 JPY
The other noteworthy results:
-Lot 109 LeRoy Neiman, “Golf Winners”, oil on board , 1984
Sold Price 4,000,000 JPY
-Lot 114 Paul Aïzpiri, “Pot de fleur”, oil on canvas
Sold Price 1,250,000 JPY
-Lot 141 Marc Chagall (After) , “Soleil couchant, from 'Nice and the Côte d'Azur' (by Charles Sorlier)”, 1967
Sold Price 1,900,000 JPY
We are going to hold the second M-Live Auction as well as the regular sale in May, and now inviting consignments.
Please feel free to apply for a free appraisal.

Sale#221201 Auction Report
On December 1, we held our last sale of the year, the "Modern & Contemporary Art Auction ". The sale consisted of 227 lots of domestic and international works, and the total amount sold was 158.94 million yen (not including commission fees, same below). This sale report introduces the lots that attracted the most bids, as well as the results of the auction.
The most exciting sales at this auction were the works of international artists such as Henryk Berlewi and Sakti Burman. Berlewi's painting has been exhibited numerous times and has traveled around the world as one of the most important works by the artist. The low price point of the estimates also made it possible for more bidders to participate. The ratio of the hammer price to Estimates was one of the highest of any sale in recent years, with the artwork sold at 32 times the estimates lower limit.
Mallet Japan also pays attention to works by artists from India and other South Asian countries. The Sakti Burman artwork, which was offered at this sale, received many inquiries from local customers before the auction, and the result was approximately 5.5 times the lower estimate. In addition to this sale, we have also sold works by Asian artists such as U Lun Gywe, Paritosh Sen, Senaka Senanayake, and Bui Huu Hung, many of whom have achieved good results.
Lot 218 Henryk Berlewi ≪Méditerranée Opus II≫ oil on canvas
Estimate: 300,000-400,000 JPY Sold Price 9,600,000 JPY
Lot 216 Sakti Burman≪Les Musiciens≫ oil on canvas
Estimate: 600,000-800,000 JPY Sold Price 3,250,000 JPY
We provide a wide range of support services for overseas customers; market research, importing artworks and promotion of them for the consignors, and registration assistance and shipping arrangement after successful bids for the buyers. So please contact us if you are interested in selling with us or bidding in the auction.
One work by On Kawara, who is known for his conceptual art and is highly acclaimed worldwide, was also included. This work is part of a series of postcards that he sent over a period of about 10 years, in which he wrote down his time for waking up. This piece sold for 3.8 times the lower estimate.
Lot 181: On Kawara from the ≪from 'I Got Up'≫ stamp on postcard
Estimate: 500,000-800,000 JPY Sold Price 1,900,000 JPY
In addition, four large works by Kei Imazu, continuing from the previous sale, were included, and the actual works hanging in the auction hall attracted a great deal of attention.
In particular, "Archive," featuring a girl and objects scattered around her like fragments of her memories, sold 2.7 times the lower estimate.
Lot 172: Kei Imazu ≪Archive≫ oil on canvas
Estimate: 700,000-1,000,000 JPY Sold Price: 1,900,000 JPY
Lot 173 Kei Imazu≪Melt City≫ oil on canvas
Estimate: 1,000,000-1,500,000 JPY Sold Price 1,600,000 JPY
The top lots were dominated by works of Yayoi Kusama and Lee U-fan, who represent Japan, and unique works by Pablo Picasso, Claude Monet, and others. The results are as follows.
Lot 26, Yayoi Kusama ≪Lemon Squash≫ screenprint in colours
Sold Price 5,600,000 JPY

We will hold the "Modern & Contemporary Art Auction" on December 1st, 2022, at 2:00 p.m JST.
The auction will feature notable works from a total of 227 lots.
The cover of this sale catalog features "An Orchard of Pears, No.1" by William Scott (1913-1989), LOT 222.
William Scott was born in Scotland in 1913 and studied at art school as a teenager.
In the 1950s, he moved to the U.S., where he interacted with artists such as Jackson Pollock and Mark Rothko. And while being exposed to abstract expressionism, he developed his own unique style of painting.
Around 1975, when he painted the present work, he established a style, combining figuration and abstraction in a single work with bold margins, simple color and form, and a tightly arranged composition.
He has become a beloved artist, especially in the United Kingdom, where he was visited by Queen Elizabeth II at his solo exhibition in Ireland in 2009.
Next on display is a unique work by Claude Monet (1840-1926), a French painter representing Impressionism.
As a young man living in a port town, he often depicted estuaries and boats as motifs in his paintings. LOT 226, "Divers Bateaux," is a drawing of a ship that Monet painted in his teens around 1857.
Although it is a small work, it depicts the details of the ship and shows the artist's advanced skills.
This is a rare and valuable opportunity for Monet's sketches to be auctioned in Japan.
Next is LOT 147 "LOVE FIGHTERS" by Ryol (1993-), an Indonesian artist selling for the first time at a Japanese auction.
As the artist himself states that he was greatly influenced by Yoshitomo Nara, his pop style absorbs Japanese anime culture, but he also raises issues about
contemporary society, such as consumerism and gender. The boy who draws a
careless heart on a dirty wall seems to question the viewer's attitude toward the
innocent and vulnerable.
We also feature four canvas works by Kei Imazu (1980-), who has attracted much attention this year for her style of creating virtual worlds using images and familiar motifs from the East and West.
All of the works were created between 2008 and 2009, and can be said to represent the early stages of her career before she established her artistic expression.
In recent years, she has moved to Indonesia to further expand her international activities.
Other artists included for the first time at Mallet Japan: Yutaka Hashimoto, who creates experimental paintings based on symbolic characters expressed through repetitive brush strokes, and Naoki Onogawa, who creates sculptures using tiny origami cranes made of 1 cm square paper, and so on.

The exhibition includes a group of original works from the Dialogue series, as seen in Lot 114, which was made in 2019 and represents the beginning of the series. Narashige Koide
Lot 203 ‘Fruits and Vegetables on the Table’ sold for 2,700,000 yen

Since the sale in May 2022, we have introduced online live bidding as a new way to participate in the auction, allowing you to browse and participate in the auction regardless of where you are located (*pre-registration is required for each sale.) Many customers bid online at this September sale as well. One of the best parts of an auction might be the atmosphere of the venue and the tension at the moment the hammer comes down. In response to customer requests to bid while watching the live streaming, we have added a new live streaming function to our online bidding platform. Although it is still under development, we will continue to strive to provide services that satisfy our customers, so please consider using the platform during the auctions.
The next auction will be held in early December. We are always accepting entries for coming auctions and inquiries about appraisals and authentication of items for sale, so please feel free to contact us. We also recommend contacting at your earliest convenience, as it may take some time for us to respond.
Please contact us by telephone, e-mail, valuation form on our website, or via official SNS accounts.
