The Auction

We have English speaking staff in our offices, please contact us if you have any kind of enquiry, or if you would like to make a visit.

Everyone is welcome to come to our auction previews. Please note that there are some cases where we will require you to show a proof of identity. Our auction preview schedule can be viewed on our homepage, and directions are available here.

In order to make a bid at our auction, we will require prior registration either before the auction or at reception on the day of the sale. Please fill out a registration form and provide us with a form of ID such as a passport or driving license. If you are participating on auction day, you will receive a bidding paddle from reception. It is also possible to place bids before the auction through absentee written bids, telephone bidding and online live bidding.
Please note that with telephone bids the number of telephone lines are limited and are issued on a first-come-first-served basis. Absentee/ Online live bids requests are accepted until 18:00 JST the day before the auction, while telephone bids requests are accepted until 18:00 JST two days before the auction. Please make sure to get your bids in before these deadlines.
Online registrations also require prior registration and submission of a proof of identity. You can also request a condition report for any lots you are interested in, however we strongly recommend coming to view the artwork in person if possible, as we do not accept any cancellations after the auction. Bids which are registered online only become active once we have sent a notice of confirmation.

*If you live outside of Japan, please note that the Membership fees are different and will require registration with Mallet International instead.
For further details, please see Chapter IV in our Conditions of Sale.

Please submit a completed telephone bidding form to us before the bidding deadline. You can also register a telephone bid when logged in to your online account on our website. Please note that with telephone bids the number of telephone lines are limited and are issued on a first-come-first-served basis.

Telephone bids are reserved for customers who intend to bid within the estimate range or above, as published in our catalogue and we strongly recommend leaving a backup bid in case of any failures to execute the telephone bid on the day. Backup bids are absentee bids that will only come into action should any communication failures occur.

Telephone bids requests are accepted until 18:00 JST two days before the auction.

The telephone operators available change at each auction. However as a general rule, we only have English and Japanese speakers available. Please also note that the number of English speaking operators is limited and English telephone bids will be issued on a first-come-first-served basis.

Anyone who has registered online can register bids online and offline.

Usually the bidding will begin around the estimate range as shown in our catalogue, though this will be decided at the auctioneer’s discretion.

The bidding generally increases in increments of around 5% of the bidding price, though this is subject to change at the auctioneer’s discretion.

As long as there are no other higher bidders, it is possible to win a lot at a lower price than your instructed maximum bid price.

We auction around 80 lots per hour, though this is just a rough estimation.

The majority of unsold lots are available after the auction for a limited period of time. At your request we can send you a list of available works after the auction, so please get in contact. The list is also made available on our website after the auction.
